Biocultural Stewardship is an informal, international, and interdisciplinary research group that advances biocultural approaches to biodiversity conservation by integrating the natural and social sciences through ethnobiology.
Stewardship practices are “actions taken by individuals, groups or networks of actors, with various motivations and levels of capacity, to protect, care for or responsibly use the environment in pursuit of environmental and social
outcomes” [
Bennett et al. 2018].
Stewardship is grounded in care, knowledge, and agency and fundamentally differs from monodisciplinary natural resource management, as stewards see themselves as part of ecosystems, whereas ecosystem managers position themselves outside [Enqvist et al. 2018; Heller et al. 2023].
This space aims to share our research and activities on this topic and to connect with students, researchers, and practitioners interested in this area.
